The Protector at a Glance
A mattress protector is the least exciting part of a bed and one of the most important. It keeps sweat, spills and accidents out of the mattress, and it protects your warranty, because almost every mattress warranty excludes stains. The problem is that many waterproof protectors are made from polyester with a plastic backing, which is the opposite of what someone buying an organic mattress wants.
The Sleep & Beyond Organic Cotton Waterproof Mattress Protector is designed for that shopper. It uses two layers of GOTS-certified organic cotton jersey bonded to a thin, bio-based waterproof film, and covers the top and four sides of the mattress. It is a natural partner for organic mattresses like the PlushBeds Signature Bliss or the EcoTerra.

Materials, Explained
GOTS Organic Cotton Jersey
The sleeping surface is soft organic cotton jersey, the same knit used in T-shirts, certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard. Jersey has some stretch, which helps the protector sit smoothly on the mattress. Sleep & Beyond also says its US fulfillment center is GOTS-certified.
Bio-Based TPU Barrier
Waterproof protectors need a barrier layer. Many use vinyl or conventional polyurethane. Sleep & Beyond uses thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that it says is non-GMO, bio-based and derived from corn starch, OEKO-TEX certified and approved by GOTS. The film is 20 microns thick with a 3-micron pore size, which is intended to block liquid while remaining thin enough not to feel crinkly.
Five-Sided Coverage
The protector covers the top and the four sides of the mattress, but not the underside. That protects against spills and accidents from above, which covers most real-world situations. If you need protection from bed bugs or allergens on all six sides, you need a zippered encasement instead.
Factory Standards
Sleep & Beyond says its factory holds Sedex, ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications, the BSCI seal and Fair Trade certification.

| Full | 54 × 76 in. | $179 |

That is more than a basic polyester protector, which can cost under $50, but in line with other certified organic options. For Split King and Split Cal King beds, you order one protector per half. Check current pricing on the Sleep & Beyond organic cotton waterproof mattress protector page.
Care and Shrinkage
Machine wash in warm water with a gentle, biodegradable detergent, and wash and dry it separately from other items. Dry on low. Sleep & Beyond warns that washing or drying on medium or high heat, or ironing, can damage the waterproof lining.
Cotton jersey shrinks. Sleep & Beyond says it may take two to five washes for noticeable shrinkage to stop, and that the protector should never shrink below standard mattress sizes. If your mattress is unusually tall, check the fit details before ordering. You can pre-wash it before first use or use it straight from the box.
Why a Protector Matters for Your Warranty
Mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects, not damage. Most list stains and soiling as exclusions, and some manufacturers may decline a claim on a stained mattress. A waterproof protector from day one is the simplest way to keep coverage intact, particularly on expensive organic mattresses with long warranties, such as PlushBeds' lifetime warranty or EcoTerra's 15-year coverage. See our best mattress guide for mattresses that pair well with it.
Protector, Encasement or Topper?
| Product | What It Does | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof protector (this product) | Blocks spills, sweat and accidents | Top and sides |
| Zippered encasement | Seals in the whole mattress against allergens and bed bugs | All six sides |
| Mattress topper | Changes how the surface feels | Top only, and usually needs its own protector |
Most people need a protector on every bed. Choose an encasement if dust mites or bed bugs are a specific concern, and a topper only if you want to change the feel of the mattress.
