The Essential by Layla at a Glance
Layla is best known for flippable mattresses with copper-infused foam. The Essential is something different: Layla's entry-level, one-sided memory foam mattress, built to keep the price low. It stands 9 inches tall, uses Layla's OpenCell+ memory foam over a firmer support foam, and in October 2026 a Queen was on sale for $599.
For that money you get a simple, medium-firm foam bed from a US brand, with CertiPUR-US certified foams, no fiberglass, a 120-night trial and a 10-year warranty. You do not get Layla's flippable design, copper infusion or extra height. That makes the Essential a good fit for guest rooms, first apartments, kids' rooms and lighter sleepers, and a weaker fit for heavier bodies.

What's Inside the Essential
Essential by Layla Layers (Top to Bottom)
9 inches total. Densities and ILD as published by Layla.
OpenCell+ Memory Foam
The comfort layer is Layla's OpenCell+ memory foam at 2.5 lb density. Layla says the foam is made with open cells that allow more airflow than conventional memory foam, which helps reduce heat buildup. With a low ILD of 9, this layer is soft and conforming, giving the classic memory foam hug at the shoulders and hips.
Support Foam
Beneath it is a polyurethane support foam at 1.5 lb density and 35 ILD. That is much firmer, so it stops you sinking too far and creates the medium/firm overall feel. Foam density is a rough indicator of durability: higher-density foams usually hold their shape longer, and budget beds often use lighter foams to save cost.
Safety and Certifications
All foams in the Essential are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they are made without formaldehyde, ozone depleters, certain regulated phthalates, and heavy metals such as mercury and lead. Layla also says the mattress contains no fiberglass in its fire barrier.
How the Essential Performs
Pressure Relief
Soft memory foam on top conforms closely, which suits lighter and average-weight side sleepers. Because the comfort layer sits over firm support foam, back sleepers also get a reasonable balance of cushioning and support.
Support for Heavier Sleepers
At 9 inches, the Essential is thinner than most mattresses on our list. Heavier sleepers compress foam more deeply and may feel the firm base, or sink at the hips. If you weigh over about 230 lb, a taller hybrid such as the Aviya is a better bet.
Motion Isolation
Memory foam absorbs movement better than coils or latex. Couples with a restless partner usually notice less disturbance on a foam bed like this one.
Temperature
Memory foam can trap heat. Layla's open-cell design is meant to counter that, but all-foam mattresses still tend to sleep warmer than latex or coil hybrids. Very hot sleepers may prefer a latex bed such as the EcoTerra.
Off-Gassing
New foam mattresses often have a smell when unboxed. Airing the room for a day or two usually helps it fade.

The Essential by Sleeping Position
Side Sleepers
Soft memory foam on top lets the shoulders and hips sink in, which is what side sleepers need. Lighter and average-weight side sleepers usually do well on the Essential.
Back Sleepers
The firm support foam underneath keeps the hips from sinking too far for most back sleepers of average weight, while the top layer fills in the curve of the lower back.
Stomach Sleepers
Lighter stomach sleepers may be comfortable, but average and heavier stomach sleepers may find the hips dip into the memory foam. A firmer hybrid is a safer bet.
Combination Sleepers
Memory foam responds slowly, so changing positions takes a little more effort than on latex or coils. Combination sleepers who move a lot may prefer something more responsive.
The Essential by Body Weight
| Body Weight | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under about 130 lb | Good | Light bodies get pressure relief without bottoming out |
| About 130 to 230 lb | Good for side and back sleepers | The medium/firm feel balances cushioning and support |
| Over about 230 lb | Limited | Nine inches of foam may compress too much; choose a taller hybrid |
Where the Essential Makes the Most Sense
Guest Rooms
For a bed used a few nights a month, the Essential offers a real mattress feel for less than many toppers and frames combined. It is far more comfortable for guests than an air mattress or sofa bed.
Kids and Teens
Lighter bodies suit a 9-inch foam mattress well, and CertiPUR-US foams and a fiberglass-free build are reassuring for a child's room.
First Apartments and Dorm-Style Rooms
The low price, compact box delivery and 120-night trial make it a low-risk first mattress. It also works on adjustable bases, which Layla lists as compatible.
Setup and Care
The Essential ships compressed. Unbox it on a solid or slatted base and allow time for it to expand fully; airing the room helps any new-foam smell fade. Foam mattresses need even support, so avoid frames with widely spaced slats. Rotate it head to foot every few months, and use a waterproof protector to keep the foam clean and the warranty valid.
Our Verdict
The Essential by Layla is a sensible, low-cost memory foam mattress from a known brand, with certified foams, no fiberglass, free returns and a 10-year warranty. It is ideal for guest rooms, kids and lighter sleepers on a budget. Heavier sleepers, hot sleepers and anyone who wants natural materials should step up to a taller hybrid or a latex bed such as the EcoTerra.
Essential by Layla Alternatives

- Need a bed for an RV? The EGOHOME Dreamer RV comes in Short Queen and RV King sizes.
- Only need a bed for occasional guests? A King Koil air mattress stores in a closet when not in use.
