Mattress Certifications Explained (2026): GOLS, GOTS, CertiPUR-US and More

Updated October 2026 ยท Materials guide

Mattress marketing is full of green words that mean very little. Certifications are different: each one covers specific materials and standards. Here is what the common labels actually certify.

The Main Certifications at a Glance

CertificationApplies ToWhat It CertifiesOrganic?
GOLSLatexLatex made from organically grown rubber, with limits on additives and processingYes
GOTSCotton, wool and finished textilesOrganic fibers plus environmental and social criteria through processingYes
OEKO-TEX Standard 100Textiles and componentsTested for a list of harmful substancesNo

CertiPUR-USPolyurethane foamFoam content, emissions and durability standardsNo

GOLS: Global Organic Latex Standard

GOLS certifies latex made from organically grown rubber trees and sets limits on the non-organic materials that can be added during processing. If a mattress contains latex and claims to be organic, GOLS is the certification to look for. The PlushBeds Signature Bliss and EcoTerra Hybrid Latex both use GOLS-certified organic latex.

GOTS: Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS covers textiles made with organic fibers, such as cotton and wool, and goes beyond the farm: it also sets environmental and social criteria for processing, dyeing and manufacturing. In mattresses, it typically applies to the cover and wool layers. Some companies also certify facilities; Sleep & Beyond, for example, lists a GOTS certificate number for its organic cotton protector.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means a textile or component has been tested for a list of substances considered harmful to health. It is about what is not in the product, not how materials were grown, so it is not an organic label. EcoTerra lists OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for its mattress, and EGOHOME for its Dreamer RV mattress.

GREENGUARD Gold

GREENGUARD Gold certifies products tested for chemical emissions, with limits intended for indoor spaces, including those used by sensitive groups such as children. It applies to the finished product, which makes it useful alongside material certifications. PlushBeds lists GREENGUARD Gold for its Botanical Bliss, Natural Bliss and Eco Bliss.

CertiPUR-US

CertiPUR-US certifies polyurethane foams, including memory foam, that meet standards for content, emissions and durability. Certified foams are made without certain substances such as formaldehyde, ozone depleters, specific regulated phthalates, and heavy metals like mercury and lead. It is a useful baseline for foam mattresses like the Essential by Layla and Aviya, but it is not an organic or natural label.

Fire Barriers: The Hidden Question

Every mattress sold in the US must meet federal flammability standards. Makers meet them in different ways: chemical flame retardants, fiberglass-based barriers, or natural materials such as wool. Certifications do not always tell you which method is used, so ask. The organic mattresses we cover use wool as the barrier, and Layla and EGOHOME state their mattresses are fiberglass-free.

How to Spot Greenwashing

ClaimWhat to Ask
"Natural" or "eco-friendly"Which certification, and for which material?
"Organic mattress"Is the latex GOLS and the textile GOTS certified, or just the cover?
"Plant-based foam"What percentage is plant-based? The rest is usually polyurethane.
"Non-toxic"Which tests or certifications support this?
"Made with organic materials"Which materials, and what share of the mattress?

How to Verify a Certification

  1. Check the brand's product page for the specific certification and the material it covers.
  2. Look for a certificate or license number, which can be checked with the certifying organization.
  3. Confirm it applies to the exact model; brands often certify some products and not others.
  4. Ask customer service if anything is unclear; reputable brands answer directly.

Mattress Certifications FAQ

What Is the Most Important Organic Mattress Certification?

For latex mattresses, GOLS certifies organic latex and GOTS certifies organic textiles such as cotton and wool. Together they cover the main comfort materials of an organic latex mattress.

Is CertiPUR-US an Organic Certification?

No. CertiPUR-US certifies polyurethane foams that meet standards for content, emissions and durability. It is a safety-related foam certification, not an organic label.

What Does GREENGUARD Gold Mean on a Mattress?

GREENGUARD Gold certification means a product has been tested for chemical emissions and meets limits intended for indoor environments, including sensitive groups such as children.

Does OEKO-TEX Mean Organic?

No. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means a textile or component has been tested for a list of harmful substances. It does not certify that materials are organically grown.

How Can I Check If a Certification Is Real?

Ask which material and which product the certification covers, and look for a certificate or license number that can be checked with the certifying body.
